to be a 50's Housewife?
Lately I've been daydreaming about leaving the corporate world... leaving behind shortage reports, time cards, active order reports, BOM's BOR's, PMT's, process improvements, objectives, TIPs, cost-cutting, toner, staples, paper clips, copy paper, stampers, highlighters, pens... my OUTDATED COMPUTER.... well, you get the point.
Anyway, I've been daydreaming about leaving it all behind. Daydreaming. No real plans. But then what? ok, let's say I leave it all behind. Then what would I possibly do? We live in an apartment. Not like I can work in the garden or paint the shutters. Andy is in Kindergarten. I would be home by myself all day. There's only so much apartment you can scrub down and organize. I could easily see myself going out of my mind when there's nothing left "to do".
I could get a part time job? Yeah! That's a good idea! Hmm... something I would like to do, but something I wouldn't feel chained down to. How about... a school lunch lady? that would be kind of fun. I like cooking, I like food, I like metal sheet pans.... In high school, I worked in a nursing home kitchen for almost 2 1/2 years... it wasn't that bad, actually... I kind of enjoyed it. I didn't always enjoy my coworkers though. But hey, I'm older now.
Although leaving my job and working as a part-time school lunch lady, I'd probably see an 85% pay decrease. ok, well maybe not that much? Hmm... what do you think? I reckon lunch ladies make about what, $6.50 an hour? At twenty hours a week, you're looking at.... a whopping $130.00 a week. Take 28% out for taxes and we're looking at a weekly take-home of $93.60. Roughly $374.00 a month. Right now I take home about $2,200.00 a month. Wow, I'm not that far off when I said I'd be taking an 85% paycut. $2,200 minus 85% equals $330.00.
And then there's medical and dental insurance, 401(k), etc. I like health insurance. I like dental insurance. And I sure as heck like 401(k).
Right now, I cover myself, Josh, Andy, and Makayla on my Health, Dental, Disability, Life, etc. insurance. Quitting my job and becoming a part time Retro Housewife / School Lunch Lady.... we would lose all of that.
And right now, my 401(k) is the only 401(k) in our family.
Wow.
I have successfully just talked myself out of any daydreams of becoming half Retro Housewife / half School Lunch Lady.
I think I hear that report calling me.... excuse me! I need a refill on my Earl Grey tea!
